CHOOSING WELL

How to choose an investment provider

A useful comparison starts with what you need. Work through these questions before getting distracted by a headline offer.

Start with your goals

Think about why you want to invest, how long you can leave money invested and when you might need access to it. A platform that suits someone else may not be right for your goals or circumstances.

Decide how involved you want to be

Self-directed platforms let you choose investments. Managed services make portfolio decisions within the service you agree to. Some providers offer both. Understand what support is guidance and what is regulated personal advice.

Compare the total cost

Check platform charges, fund charges, dealing fees, foreign exchange costs and any subscription. Ask what the charges would be at your intended balance and trading frequency. A low headline fee may cover only one part of the service.

Look at the everyday experience

Research how deposits, withdrawals and transfers work. Look for clear statements, accessible customer support and explanations you understand. Check the investments available rather than assuming every platform offers the same choices.

Verify the provider and the product

Use the FCA Register to check the relevant legal entity and its permissions. Follow official contact details and be alert to firms impersonating legitimate businesses. For a Starter ISA, look for a specific product announcement and terms.

Make your own shortlist

Use our provider directory to explore service types. Inclusion is not a recommendation and provisional participation is not confirmed availability. If you need a personal recommendation, speak with an appropriately authorised financial adviser.
