THE COST OF INVESTING

Investment fees, without the jargon

Small-looking charges can matter over time. Read the whole price list rather than comparing one number.

Starter ISA editorial · Reviewed 28 October 2026 · General information

Platform and account charges

A provider may charge a percentage of your balance, a fixed subscription, or a combination. Minimum charges, caps and account tiers can change the result. Compare at the amount you expect to hold.

Fund and portfolio costs

Funds can charge for managing the investments they hold. Managed portfolios may involve a separate management fee as well as underlying investment costs. Ask whether quoted figures include both.

Dealing and currency conversion

Buying and selling investments can incur dealing charges, spreads and taxes. Buying assets priced in another currency may also involve a foreign exchange charge. Commission-free does not mean every service is free.

Other conditions worth reading

Look for withdrawal and transfer charges, paid account features and conditions attached to promotions. Check whether an introductory discount expires and what you would pay afterwards.
