BUILDING CONFIDENCE

Understanding investment risk

Investing offers the possibility of growth, alongside the possibility of loss. Understanding that trade-off is part of making a considered decision.

Starter ISA editorial · Reviewed 28 October 2026 · General information

Your balance can fall

Investments move with markets and the fortunes of the underlying assets. You can receive less than you put in. A tax-efficient account changes tax treatment; it does not make the investments inside it risk-free.

Time matters, but does not guarantee a return

Money needed soon may not have time to recover from a market fall. Thinking over a longer period can help you assess investment choices, but no holding period guarantees a positive outcome.

Diversification spreads exposure

Holding a range of investments can reduce reliance on a single company, sector or market. It does not eliminate risk. Check what a fund actually holds rather than relying on the number of investments in its name.

Keep access needs in view

Consider money you may need for essential spending or unexpected costs before committing it to investments. Withdrawals can take time and may require selling assets at an unfavourable moment.

Protection is not a guarantee against market losses

Regulatory authorisation and any applicable compensation arrangements do not insure investment performance. Check the protection that applies to the specific firm and service, and what is excluded.

Get support when you need it

Plain-language information can help with research, but it cannot assess your personal circumstances. An authorised adviser can help if you need a recommendation tailored to you.
